The Blanquette
This goat-fairy lights over the snow on New Year's Eve to bestow blessings upon reverent households. She comes bearing two babies: one blossoming sweet, the other diseased, ill tempered and wan. A room must be prepared and a table laid out with a crisp white cloth and bread and wine to delight the Blanquette. If she is pleased she will leave the joyous babe, conferring its blessings for the year to come on all who dwell with the peace of its smile. However, if the Blanquette alights on a praylerless house, displaying ashes, debris and an irreverance for beauty, she will leave the wretched child there to sputter and snivel, torturing inhabitants all the year round with its pitiful, mewling cries.
